Jan Hus – priest, burnt at the stake, heretic, religious thinker, to recall his teaching,

Statehood day – the anniversary of the death of …; patron saint of the Czech nation; pilgrimage

Independence Day – to establish an independent kation; succession state,

Struggle for Freedom and Democracy day – to supress the protest, to arrest somebody, velvet revolution;

 

New Year’s Eve – first footing, hangover, to toast, lentils, poultry;

Trooping the Colour

Halloween – the eve before the All Saints’ Day, pumpkin lanterns – to hollow a pumpkin, carved pumpkins; to dress up, to scare away evil spirits, trick-o’-treating, pagan holiday;

Bonfire Night – to conspire/to plot against, to rent a cellar, barrels with gunpowder, to warn, to blow up some building, a plot was revealed; to make a figure – to stuff old clothes with newspapers etc…; bonfire, fireworks;
